Instead of New Year’s Resolutions Commit to the 3-3-3-3-3 Rule
It’s just about the end of 2015 and the start of a brand new year. I am excited about the upcoming year and I hope you are too. I never make New Year’s resolutions. I learned a long while back if I can follow the 3-3-3-3-3 rule I have no need for New Year’s resolutions.
I recently came across the 3-3-3 rule in a Youtube interview that Marie Forleo did with a guest of hers.
I have always used this approach but never gave it a name and that’s why I latched on to it when I heard in this interview- it just made what I was doing more deliberate and easier to describe to others. My version has 5 top 3 things versus 3 from Marie’s guest.
The rule is simple. Take some time to look ahead to the new year and do the following:
- Identify the top 3 things you must accomplish for the year.
Don’t worry about the details around how you will accomplish them just identify them. Dig deep to make sure these top 3 things are deeply meaningful and purposeful to you. I encourage you to move away from setting goals such as lose weight, find a partner, get a better job etc. These kinds of goals are often the end results or outcomes from setting deeply meaningful and purpose driven goals.
An example of a deeply meaningful and purpose driven goal that would attract your ideal partner into your life would be: identify a charitable organization that does work that is reflective of my need to contribute to improving the quality of people’s or animals’ lives.
If you’re wondering how this kind of goal could bring the perfect partner into your life- here’s how. By focusing on improving the quality of life of others- animals or humans- you take the focus off your own needs. You develop a sense of purpose and such deep meaning that you no longer are mired in t
houghts of scarcity and lack. Your thoughts are focused on giving abundantly with no expectations of getting anything in return. You will be working with others who are on a similar wavelength and this is where the magic begins with forging healthy, nourishing relationships. Don’t just try this- commit to doing it with no end in mind.
- Identify the top 3 things you must accomplish each quarter in order to accomplish the top 3 for the year
- Identify the top 3 things you must accomplish each month in order to meet the quarterly goals in order to meet the top 3 for the year
- Identify the top 3 things you must accomplish each week in order to meet the monthly goals in order to meet the quarterly goals etc.
- Identify the top 3 things you must accomplish each day in order to meet the weekly goals……
When you use an approach such as the 3-3-3-3-3 rule you will see why there is just no need to set New Year’s resolutions in its traditional sense. You also will find you are no longer the victim of New Year’s resolutions gone south. This approach is designed to keepyou focused, on track and clear in about why you do what you do.
